While rough quotations for simple single-sided and double-sided PCBs are possible, accurate quotations for complex multilayer PCBs (more than four layers) are challenging. Moreover, PDF files or JPG pictures cannot be used for PCB fabrication directly; only PCB format files or Gerber files are suitable for this purpose. Below is the essential information needed for PCB fabrication or quotation. It's crucial to obtain this information before production.
Firstly, the PCB design should be complete and created using common software such as Protel DXP, PowerPCB, PADS, or Altium. Simple PCBs can also be designed using AutoCAD software. The acceptable file formats include PCB, ODB, Gerber, DWG, and PCBDOC.
PCBs designed with uncommon software from certain countries may not be manufacturable in China. This is because Chinese PCB manufacturers need to convert these files to Gerber format, and they may not have the necessary software to do so. Using incompatible software can lead to undetected errors during conversion, posing a risk to the production process.
Secondly, the PCB specifications should be clearly indicated in the email or Gerber files. Essential details include:
1. Total board thickness.
2. Copper thickness.
3. Solder mask color.
4. Silkscreen color.
5. Surface treatment.
Most importantly, to quote an accurate price, manufacturers need to know the required quantity. Some customers only send the Gerber file without mentioning the quantity, leading to additional communication and wasted time.
